Old Canvas Expeditions
Specialist African Safaris - More than just a game drive

AN INVITATION TO LODGE OWNERS AND SAFARI OPERATORS

Old Canvas Expeditions is in a unique position whereby it can add immense value to your safari lodge or establishment. We are currently running specialist safaris at select lodges and venues in South Africa with great success, bring valuable clientele into the venues and providing them with phenomenal safari experiences. We are willing to do likewise for your venue and we believe that you can only benefit from such an association.

Discussions with stakeholders in the industry indicate that innovative ways of attracting guests to lodges are required, particularly in the current economic climate. Many travelers have been to Africa, seen the Big 5, gone on umpteen game drives and generally done the whole “safari” scene, and are now looking for something more. Old Canvas Expeditions can ratchet any safari experience up to another level by conducting specialist workshops at your lodge. These workshops are fun, entertaining and of course educational.

Few can resist the allure of learning to paint under the spreading boughs of a fever tree, or honing up photographic skills to keep abreast of a fast changing digital world. Then there is the natural world to expand on – birding, geology, tree identification and botany being obvious examples. Anthropology can be a real hit depending on your location, as we are all well aware Africa truly is the Cradle of Humankind.

All of these skills are available to Old Canvas Expeditions and we are able to tailor-make specific safaris for your lodge, using our in house skills and experience. Nearly all of our workshops run over 3 days, generally beginning on a Thursday night and ending Sunday lunchtime. However we are not beholden to these schedules and will entertain longer sessions or combined/multidisciplinary workshops. One of the added spin-offs is that your field guides also increase their skills just by being part of the workshop infrastructure.

We are currently able to run the following workshops:

  • Photography
  • Geology – Romancing the Stone
  • Drawing and Painting
  • Birding
  • Botany
  • Anthropology
  • Sculpture and Creativity
  • Cooking

Please browse around our site and see what we are about and who our professional staff are. We then invite you to contact us to discuss running workshops and specialist safaris for your guests. It is all about adding value, providing phenomenal experiences and getting the guests involved with their environment, whether it is looking at the rocks beneath their feet, or "seeing" their world, perhaps for the first time, as they compose photographic shots or look for the perfect painting composition.
